Arsenal needed to beat their Merseyside rivals Everton at the Emirates to have any chance of overtaking Liverpool but a victory for the Reds would end Arsene Wenger’s incredible run of qualifying for the Champions League every year since 1998.
Thompson says he would rather have been playing against a team towards the top of the table because of his old side’s poor record against the lesser teams this season.

But he still expected Liverpool to get the job done against Steve Agnew's side at Anfield.
“I’d be more confident if we were playing against a team in the top 10, top six,” he said on Sky Sports.
“I’ve been feeling like it all season. Most other times you’d probably think, who would you like at the end of the season? A team that’s relegated, everything’s done, you play at Anfield.

“So you couldn’t pick it better but myself and all Liverpool fans are still feeling nervous because of the recent history of games at Anfield, dropped points, the defeats this season against teams at the time who were in the bottom seven.
“It’s always happened and that’s why we’re nervous today and rightly so.
“I think a good start, a very fast start from the players and make the fans realise, I think it would see us over the line. I do think we will win but it will be nervous again.”
