Real Madrid: Why Spanish giants are Champions League favourites

REAL MADRID are favourites to lift the Champions League in May.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in all eight of Real Madrid's Champions League games

That’s according to former Galactico Fernando Morientes who saw Madrid progress past PSG into the quarter finals this week.

Real are currently 15 points behind leaders Barcelona in La Liga, while also seven points adrift of city rivals Atletico Madrid.

But having breezed past PSG 5-2 on aggregate, Morientes believes Los Blancos are now in pole position to lift the Champions League.

Morientes told Marca: “There have been games where Real Madrid played to obtain points in La Liga, but nothing was achieved.

“That has caused the gap in terms of points with those above.

“In the Champions League they are reaching the expected level and, even more, when many have said they weren't going to be able [to achieve that].

“They have struggled in La Liga, but in the Champions League they maintain that great level to which they have been accustomed and now they are clear favourites.”

If they are to win the Champions League, with the final in Kiev on May 26, Real Madrid will have to overcome stiff opposition.

Premier League leaders Manchester City have already progressed to the last eight, along with fellow English side Liverpool.

Indeed, City are currently favourites to win the silverware with most bookies with Real just behind them.

Juventus joined Los Blancos and City in the quarter finals on Wednesday night as they knocked out Tottenham at Wembley.

Bayern Munich are all but through too, taking a 5-0 lead into next week’s second leg at Besiktas.

Chelsea and Barcelona are all square on aggregate going into Wednesday’s second leg at the Nou Camp.

Manchester United are also level with La Liga side Sevilla, bringing a goalless draw back to Old Trafford.

The other last 16 tie sees Shakhtar Donetsk leading Roma 2-1 with the second leg in the Italian capital to come.
