Games hit gold in Glasgow says Dame Kelly Holmes
OLYMPICS hero Dame Kelly Holmes says Glasgow has rescued the Commonwealth Games.
It was very important for the movement and the continued interest in the Commonwealth Games that these Games were very good
They closed last night with England topping the medals table for the first time in 28 years and Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Mike Hooper said Glasgow was the best ever.
The Commonwealth Games were in a dire state after the disaster of Delhi in 2010, when a bridge and a ceiling collapsed, venues were not ready and there was general chaos.
Holmes, 44, president of Commonwealth Games England and double champion from the Athens Olympics, says Glasgow has renewed faith in the Games.
She said: “It was very important for the movement and the continued interest in the Commonwealth Games that these Games were very good.
“Now they have given the Commonwealth an exposure that was maybe missing.”
