Ryanair luggage rule warning ahead of Easter travel rush - everything you need to know

Ryanair has strict luggage rules which could catch travellers out if you aren't aware of your exact baggage allowance before arriving at the airport this Easter holiday season.

is known for its incredibly low-cost , with journeys starting from as little as £24, and with the Easter bank holiday weekend fast approaching, holidaymakers from across the UK might be gearing up for a busy few weeks of travel. But, if you are flying with Ryanair this Easter holiday period, it's important you are in the know about your allowance or your cheap flights might not be so cheap any more.

While Ryanair might offer purse-friendly tickets initially, the cost can add up if you want any additional extras - and that includes your bags.

Passengers flying on a , which can measure no more than 40 x 20 x 25cm, and must fit under the seat in front of you. If you want to bring any more luggage than this, then you will need to pay for it.

Passengers who wish to take a second, larger piece of luggage must purchase a Priority fare.

Priority fares allow customers to take a small personal bag (40 x 20 x 25cm) and a cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20cm) weighing up to 10kg with them onboard, but there are some extra perks. Priority fare passengers also board the plane first via the Priority Queue.

Priority plus two extra bags costs between £6 and £36 when done online, compared to at the check-in desk where it can cost anywhere from £20 to £38.

If priority is sold out, you can pay to check your bag into the hold by purchasing a 10kg check-in bag.

When purchased online, a 10kg checked bag can cost anywhere from £11.99 to £29.99. However, at the airport, passengers could end up forking out between £23.99 and £35.99.

If you do show up at the boarding gate with a 10kg bag which has not been purchased in advance, you could face a last-minute check-in fee of £46.00 should it be rejected at the gate.

Alternatively, if you are going on a longer holiday or are planning on packing more items, they can purchase a 20kg check-in bag.

A 20kg checked bag can cost between £18.99 and £59.99 per flight when purchased online or, when done at the airport, will set you back between £44.99 and £59.99 per flight if purchased at the check-in desk.

Ryanair warns that some suitcases purchased at the bag drop desk can incur a fee of up to £70.

In all cases with Ryanair, it's best to book your additional luggage ahead of arriving at the airport and make sure to weigh your suitcases before heading to the airport. Bags found to be in excess of the weight allowance will be slapped with an excess baggage fee.
