Diesel drivers face ‘discrimination’ with £250 parking fee labelled a ‘cash grab’

UK motorists will want to check their council's residential rules before buying and parking one of these vehicles on the street outside their homes.

Diesel drivers are under financial pressure as they face annual costs of up to £250 for parking on the street, with London residents receiving the highest charges.

These surcharges aim to reduce harmful emissions, but some driving groups feel the rules are unnecessary.

Luke Bosdet, AA motoring policy spokesperson, said: “Influencing vehicle ownership towards greener alternatives is done evenly through national taxation, such as vehicle excise duty or company car tax.

“National car taxes ensure that all drivers are treated equally and are rewarded or penalised for their choice of vehicle.

“Diesel surcharges imposed by councils discriminate against residents who have to park their cars on the street outside their homes, while their neighbours with driveways and off-street parking can have whatever vehicle they want,” according to GB News.

Bosdet added that the parking costs were “simply a council cash grab.”

Residential on-street parking permits cost more for diesel vehicles in 18 of London’s 32 boroughs, The Independent reports.

East London’s Hackney council carries the highest maximum permit cost at £250.

Council estate residents pay half this surcharge, while some modern diesel vehicles are exempt.

The UK is continuing to issue diesel parking surcharges to work toward meeting its legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050.
