Ex-Liverpool transfer target gives seal of approval over Jurgen Klopp replacement

Jurgen Klopp announced earlier this year that he is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

star Joao Palhinha believes that Ruben Amorim would have no problems in winning over the support of supporters this summer if he does join the club. The Sporting boss is favourite to succeed in the Anfield dugout at the end of the season.

Klopp announced in January that he is set to leave the Reds at the end of the season as he is ‘running out of energy’ at the club and felt that it was his responsibility to walk away from his beloved side when the time was right, knowing that Fenway Sports Group would never sack him.

The announcement sparked Liverpool into life in the managerial market, with ex-midfielder Xabi Alonso being promptly earmarked as their top target. However, the Spaniard ruled that he was set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season, which saw Liverpool then turn their attention to Amorim.

The 39-year-old has impressed at Sporting this season and his attacking, expansive brand of football feels like a natural transition from Klopp’s high-energy, pressing style. Amorim has refused to rule out a move away from Portugal this summer, with reports suggesting that there is an aura of confidence around Liverpool’s negotiations with the manager.

Fulham star Palhinha worked with Amorim at both Braga and Sporting, and the midfielder – who was previously linked with a move to Liverpool – is confident that his ex-boss has what it takes to thrive on Merseyside. He told the Daily Mail: “If he signs for Liverpool, I have no doubt people will like his personality. I can believe he is a big option to replace Jurgen Klopp but we don’t know what will happen. He’ll step into a higher level in his career at some point.

“You can’t fully compare Sporting with a world club like Liverpool but there is also big pressure on a coach fighting for titles in Portugal. He is used to coping with that.

“He plays with three at the back. He likes to have possession. At Braga, he didn’t change even when we didn’t win. He kept the same idea with the build-up. If I needed to compare his teams with anyone, it is this season’s Bayer Leverkusen (under Alonso). The way they want to have the ball and manage the ball.

“If it does happen he goes to Liverpool, it will be a new challenge but their players are adaptable and his way is good.” The positive review from Palhinha will be music to the ears of Reds supporters, and with a spending spree anticipated at the club over the summer, it remains to be seen whether the Fulham maestro re-emerges as a midfield target.
