A footballer in Mexico has apologised after being accused of pointing a laser pen at an opposition player midway through a match. Nahuel Guzman, who plays for Liga MX side Tigres, was caught on camera shining the laser towards the field.

The incident occurred during Tigres’ clash with cross-town rivals Monterrey, which Guzman wasn’t involved in due to an injury. However, Tigres’ usual starting goalkeeper grabbed headlines, as he has been accused of directing a laser at opposition shot-stopper Esteban Andrada.

Monterrey were quick to respond after the game, with club officials filing a complaint to Liga MX’s disciplinary committee, which Mexican outlet TUDN first confirmed. Additionally, as per The Athletic, an investigation is underway with a LigaMX spokesperson telling the publication that a decision on whether or not to condiuct their own investigation will be made at a disciplinary committee meeting on Monday.

A clip on social media, which has been viewed over 600,000 times on site X, shows a green laser coming out of a suite. Eagle-eyed fans clocked the man holding the laser was goalkeeper Guzman, with the 38-year-old forced into an apology.

Taking to X to issue his apology, Guzman said: “As I already did privately and in coherence with the values of the Institution that I represent, I want to take advantage of the importance of Social Networks to publicly offer my apologies to Esteban for the event that occurred last night during passages of the 1st Half of the Clasico Regio [Monterrey vs Tigres].”

It could be too little too late for the Argentine though, as Guzman may face disciplinary action because of the complaint, with an investigation ongoing. However, Guzman is no stranger to peculiar antics on and off a football pitch, with the six-cap Argentine international having once hidden under a tarpaulin after being sent off.

Guzman’s laser stunt didn’t help his Tigres team-mates, with the eight-time Mexican champions held to a 3-3 draw against their closest rivals. The visitors had twice taken the lead against Monterrey, but a second-half comeback saw the home side snatch a point, with the equaliser coming in the 100th minute of the match.

Guzman will now face an anxious wait to see if his case is escalated by the Liga MX disciplinary committee, which if it is, could see him handed a hefty punishment.
