Golf fans served a timely reminder to Scottie Scheffler as he closed in on a second Masters triumph after he vowed to leave Augusta National even if he got the call that his wife had gone into labour. The American is imminently expecting his first child with his wife Meredith and had insisted he would put family first in the event of a clash in priorities.

The 27-year-old is experiencing one of the true landmark years of his life so far, with professional success on the golf course juxtaposed with a time of change for him in his personal life. The man from New Jersey remained focused on the job at hand at the iconic Georgia course, however, to secure the green jacket at the weekend.

Finishing 11-under par to secure the spoils for a second time in three outings, Scheffler saw off the challenge of runner-up Ludvig Aberg to further strengthen his case as an emerging modern great. His second major - with both tastes of glory having come in the Masters - was secured by four shots over his Swedish rival.

With the eventual victor poised for a nail-biting final round at Augusta, and boasting a slight lead over Collin Morikawa on Sunday, fans were all too aware that the win was far from certain. In fact, there was still every chance he would still have to make an impromptu exit from proceedings, having previously confessed to the The Augusta Chronicle: "I’ll be out of here! I think first child wins over quite a … over many things in my life.

"We have somebody here that has access to their cell phone, if that’s alright and, yes, I’ll be available to go home whenever I need to," he said as he vowed to contravene the rules against mobile devices on the iconic Augusta course, before expressing hope that he would get the call from his wife if she did go into labour, adding: "She better call."

With a second Masters triumph in three years on the line, fans soon issued a reminder that Scheffler had made a promise to depart the Georgia venue if he was to get receive unexpected message from home. One observer commented on Twitter/X: "There's only one person who can stop Scottie Scheffler from winning the Masters right now. When’s the baby due again?"

Likewise, a fan also joked: Might officially be a two-man race between Scottie and Baby Scheffler, before another amusingly point out: "There are like 3 guys right now who desperately need Meredith Scheffler to go into labor. There is one who probably does not."

With his nearest challengers agonisingly left in the lurch over their fate while the American was en route to victory during the final round, other fans addressed the elephant in the room. One witty user said: "Aberg and Homa praying Scheffler’s wife goes into labour ASAP," while another joked: "Homa and Aberg about to place the call that Scheffler's wife is in labour."

Eventually, however, the stars alligned for Scheffler as he saw out another memorable showing at Augusta to earn himself the legendary green jacket honours once more. Celebrating making history again following his previous heroics in 2022, the current world No. 1 emotionally said: "All I can think about is getting home. It is a special time for us," said the world number one.

"I will go home, soak in this victory and enjoy the birth of my first child. I am looking forward to celebrating with Meredith - it's been a long week without her. My priorities will change very soon. My son or daughter will be the main priority, along with my wife, so golf will now be probably fourth in line."
