travel might be good for the environment but it’s also one of the best ways to see the world.

One of the world’s prettiest train rides is located in Europe and the route passes through natural beauty spots and several scenic villages.

The Black Forest Railway or Badische Schwarzwaldbahn stretches for 149km through breathtaking Black Forest.

Interrail says: “The Black Forest Railway passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. Think pine forests, rock faces and dark overhead branches.”

The train leaves from the small city of Offenburg and tourists will quickly find themselves immersed in nature.

Donaueschingen

Offenburg is renowned for wine production and the town’s history dates back to the Roman era.

From Offenburg, the train heads south to Hornberg and passengers will notice the scenery change to pine forests as it passes through tunnels.

If you get off the train in Hornberg, make sure to visit the House of Black Forest Clocks to get an understanding of cuckoo clock production in the region.

Lake Constance

After Hornberg, the train reaches Donaueschingen where it links up with the Upper Rhine Railway to continue on to Lake Constance.

Donaueschingen is a typical Black Forest town and the ideal place to sample local dishes such as ham or a slice of gateau.

At Lake Constance, relax on the shores of the lake or sample some of the regional wines which are fruity and aromatic.

Double-decker trains run on this route so get there early to claim a seat on the top-deck for the best views.

If you have an Interrail pass, it’s valid on the Black Forest line and the journey takes just over two hours.
